Ysgol Gymraeg Ystalyfera
New Welsh speaking school contributing to Neath Port Talbot Council’s strategic school improvement programme
Originally established in 1969, the school was transformed under the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning.
The new development comprises a two-storey teaching block incorporating dedicated music rooms, a multi-functional hall, and a canteen designed to accommodate up to 180 pupils. The adaptable layout of the canteen allows it to serve a variety of purposes beyond mealtimes.
Enhanced sporting provision includes new changing facilities with direct access to a 2G sports pitch and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), both designed for use beyond school hours. The entire facility has been carefully designed to promote inclusivity, featuring intuitive wayfinding, high-contrast colour schemes for the visually impaired, and fully accessible lifts and toilets.
Achieving BREEAM Excellent rating, the building incorporates natural ventilation strategies and photovoltaic panels to support sustainability goals. Inclusive design principles and extensive stakeholder engagement ensured the scheme met the diverse needs of pupils, staff, and the wider community.

Can you pass my thanks on to all of your team for another fantastic building. Again there has been an excellent working relationship between Scotts and the school and I look forward to completing the final phase in the new year.
