Social Value

Creating Meaningful Social Value Impact Beyond Construction

We lead by example, creating meaningful, measurable, and lasting positive impacts for the communities and clients we work with. Our approach is built on a foundation of transparency, fairness, and integrity, holding ourselves accountable for driving real social impact and supporting communities in overcoming economic inequality.

Through tailored Social Value Plans, we drive environmental responsibility, promote equal opportunity, and support local wellbeing. Our approach includes targeted training, outcome tracking, inclusive supply chain partnerships, and community focused investment. These include targeted recruitment and training initiatives, as well as the tracking of employment outcomes, supply chain engagement, and community investment.

Our Social Value strategy is fully aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the Public Services (Social Value) Act, ensuring our efforts contribute to a better, fairer future for all.

The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change. The Act is unique to Wales attracting interest from countries across the world as it offers a huge opportunity to make a long-lasting, positive change to current and future generations. Our approach to the delivery of community benefits and social value is entirely aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015. We have a proven track record of delivering social value within Andrew Scott Ltd, capturing and recording training, recruitment, supply chain spend and community engagement data on all our projects. By engaging with the communities in which we work, we deliver a lasting legacy through our projects, going beyond bricks and mortar to deliver tangible differences in communities.

UN17 Sustainable Development

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. (source - sdgs.un.org)

Using the pillars of Corporate Social Responsibility as a foundation, we aim to deliver projects that meet and exceed the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals. By integrating our goals into our Social Value Plan, we develop projects that benefit future generations, addressing local and global concerns regarding the environment, health and education, unemployment, poverty, and equality

Public Services Act 2012

The Public Services (Social Value) Act came into force on 31 January 2013. It requires people who commission public services to think about how they can also secure wider social, economic and environmental benefits. (source - gov.uk)

We are committed to the delivery of initiatives that will positively contribute to the social, economic and environmental well-being of the regions in which we work, in accordance with the Social Value Act (2012). We work collaboratively to deliver meaningful projects that benefit all. Social value is embedded into our business practices and underpins our decision-making process. We encourage our clients and staff to highlight causes that matter to them and support them however we can. We also have company-wide procedures for supporting in-demand organisations such as food banks or emergency response appeals.

Supporting our Communities

We are committed to the delivery of community initiatives that will positively contribute to the social, economic and environmental well-being of the local community.

We work collaboratively to maximise benefits for the regions where we work, helping to achieve the well-being goals as set out in the Well-Being of Future Generations (Wales) Act. We are involved in a wide range of national and regional projects which aim to enhance the communities in which we live and work.

We are exceptionally proud to have supported national and local causes including Jiffy’s Cancer 50 Challenge , Llanelli Warriors RFC, Ysgol Cwm Brombil Community Fund and Kin Cymru. Over the years Andrew Scott Ltd has given generously to foodbanks across Wales, with our staff always giving generously and going the extra mile to help others. We understand as a result of the economic impacts that Covid-19 has placed on many households, a lot more people are requiring the use of food banks during this time. This Easter we held an Easter Egg Appeal in our Head Office and across all of our sites with the aim of collecting 300 Easter Eggs for 4 food banks across South Wales (Pontypridd, Port Talbot, Ystalyfera and Llanelli.) Our appeal, which was supported by our staff and subcontractors saw ASL donate over 1200 Easter Eggs to food banks in the region. The success of the appeal allowed us to support a further 2 food banks in Britton Ferry and Ystradgynlais.

We engage with local groups and charities most in need of our support. ASL provides continuous support to local causes throughout the year. It is in our culture to give back and our staff always get involved in fundraising activities.

Sustainable Procurement

As one of the largest contractors in our region, we have a long-term commitment to the economy and champion the use of local suppliers and subcontractors, maximising SMEs. We always aim to maximise the social impact of capital investment directly into the communities in which we work. As a national contractor, we already have existing relationships with many SMEs, who we have supported for a number of years.

We are signatories to the Welsh Government’s ‘Code of Practice: Ethical Employment in Supply Chains’ and at all times comply with the Code’s 12 commitments designed to support ethical employment practices. As part of our supplier pre-qualification process we also encourage our subcontractors to adopt the Code through their supply chain.

STEM Engagement

Promoting STEM to all ages: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.

As a member of the Careers Wales Education Business Exchange, we are wholly committed to improving education and career prospects for young people across Wales. We work in partnership with and engage with local schools, colleges and universities and showcase the diverse and rewarding opportunities that are available within the construction industry.

Our programme of STEM engagement is delivered via:

  • Construction Career advice sessions and assemblies for pupils who are thinking about their options and career choices after school.

  • Creating Construction Ambassadors for projects.

  • Hosting a Girls into STEM/Women in Construction focused day for Key Stage 3 female students from secondary schools.

  • Attendance at career days in schools, colleges and universities and larger career events such as Career Wales Choose Your Future Events.

We manage and develop a series of engagements that enhance students’ learning. We are supported by our CITB Construction Ambassadors and STEM Ambassadors who promote the industry through educational outreach. We are a proud signatory of the Tomorrow’s Engineers Code, as managed by Engineering UK, and work with them to provide meaningful and diverse learning experiences.
