Ysgol Gyfun Maes y Gwendraeth
Modern education campus with BREEAM Excellence
This project represents a bold investment in educational infrastructure, designed and constructed to reflect modern teaching needs, community integration, and environmental responsibility. With BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards achieved across all new buildings, Ysgol Gyfun Maes Y Gwendraeth now stands as a flagship secondary school for Carmarthenshire, prepared to serve future generations of learners.
The project formed a key part of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Secondary School Development Strategy. Andrew Scott Ltd was appointed under a two-stage design and build contract to deliver significant upgrades to school, consolidating and modernising its facilities following the strategic merger of local secondary schools and the closure of outdated sites.
Block 21 – Design & Technology Building
A modern, purpose-built Design and Technology Block (Block 21) was constructed and linked to the existing school, along with associated external works. This building addresses long-standing challenges at the school, including insufficient teaching space and a lack of outdoor play and social areas.
The new building provides generously proportioned, flexible teaching spaces that reflect a forward-thinking, 21st-century learning environment. Designed with inclusivity and student wellbeing in mind, the building ensures that all learners have access to facilities that support a positive and accessible educational experience.
Block 23 – New Sports Hall Extension
Block 23 is a sports hall extension comprising a full-sized indoor sports facility, changing rooms, a classroom, and staff office accommodation. The new facility supports both curricular and extracurricular sports provision and was delivered to meet the same high standards of energy efficiency and sustainable construction.
3G MUGA Facility & Community Engagement
As part of the wider campus redevelopment, Andrew Scott Ltd constructed a high-specification 3G Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) within the school grounds. Designed for both school and community use, the facility offers a durable, all-weather sports surface, significantly enhancing recreational opportunities for students and local groups.
The new pitch was officially opened with the rugby union final of the John Beynon Cup VIII, contested between YG Maes Y Gwendraeth and Dyffryn Aman, and refereed by former international referee Nigel Owens a fitting inauguration for a facility destined to serve the community for generations.
Delivering a complex construction programme in a live school setting posed significant logistical and safety challenges. Andrew Scott Ltd worked closely with the client team from early design stages to develop realistic target costs and ensure seamless coordination during delivery. Extensive stakeholder engagement, phased planning, and strict site safety measures ensured minimal disruption to ongoing teaching and school operations.

The project was excellently run both on an off site. Andrew Scott were very collaborative wih the project team, school and client. Although the works were carried out on a live school site, which can be a challenge, Andrew Scott managed the site excellently throughout the works. Andrew Scott were very conscientious throughout the project and CCC were very happy with the Health and Safety and Quality of the works throughout.
