Full refurbishment of the Visitor Centre at Tintern Abbey

Andrew Scott Ltd was appointed to deliver the full refurbishment of the Visitor Centre at the historic Tintern Abbey, located on the northern edge of the Grade I listed ruins. This important project was delivered as part of CADW’s ongoing conservation programme, aimed at stabilising, recording, and preserving one of Wales’ most iconic heritage sites.

Working in close collaboration with CADW, Andrew Scott Ltd successfully integrated sustainable and cost-effective systems into the refurbishment, including the installation of photovoltaic panels for energy generation and a ground-source heat pump system to provide efficient heating.

Scope of Works:

  • Erection of a purpose-designed scaffold to facilitate safe access and protect the site

  • Careful removal and replacement of the existing wood-wool slab structural roof deck

  • Construction of a new flat roof on existing timber joists, incorporating a tapered insulation system

  • Installation of a solar PV array atop the new flat roof

  • Drilling and connection of ground-source heat pump boreholes located in the visitor car park

  • Full toilet refurbishment with modern finishes

  • Complete shop and retail area fit-out, including new joinery, furniture, lighting and finishes

The new Visitor Centre represents a successful blend of heritage preservation and modern sustainability, setting a benchmark for future works across the historic estate.
