Award-winning sustainable bridge connects Hereford

WINNER: Institution of Chartered Engineers Regional Sustainability Award

This landmark bridge over the River Wye in Hereford marks the first new crossing of the river in over 55 years. A vital addition to the Sustrans National Cycle Network, it provides a sustainable transport link connecting Hereford city centre with the Rotherwas business district, encouraging walking, cycling, and wheeling as low-carbon alternatives to motor travel.

Environmental sensitivity was paramount throughout the design and construction of the project. Given the ecological significance of the River Wye, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) a comprehensive suite of mitigation measures was implemented to reduce environmental impact. These included minimising in-river works, adopting non-invasive construction techniques, and carefully scheduling activities to avoid sensitive periods for local wildlife.

The structure’s reinforced concrete retaining wall was installed using micro-piling techniques to reduce ground disturbance and preserve the integrity of the surrounding environment.

Spanning 100 metres, the elegant double-span cable-stayed bridge features a three-span ramp at its city end, ensuring inclusive access for all users while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding landscape.

This award-winning project stands as a model of sustainable infrastructure blending innovative engineering with environmental stewardship to deliver a long-lasting legacy for Hereford and its communities.
