Emergency Roofing Programme at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend

In response to a critical roofing issue at Princess of Wales Hospital, Andrew Scott Ltd was appointed under emergency procurement to deliver a large-scale roof replacement programme across approximately 10,000m² of the hospital estate.

The original roofing, over 40 years old, suffered from significant deterioration due to poor ventilation, causing widespread rot in the timber battens supporting the concrete roof tiles. Urgent action was required to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.

Working closely with the University Health Board, our team developed and implemented a phased construction programme that allowed hospital services to continue safely throughout the works.

We maintained daily coordination with clinical and estates teams, enabling seamless transitions as services and patients moved between refurbished areas. This collaborative approach ensured minimal disruption to hospital operations, including maternity and neonatal care, which successfully returned to newly completed areas in February 2025.

Health and safety were paramount, and we developed and adhered to rigorous Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to protect everyone on site. Measures included:

  • Secure work zone segregation

  • Noise, dust, and vibration controls

  • Continuous access for emergency routes

  • Strict hygiene and infection control procedures

The new roofing system isn’t just safer it’s sustainable, as part of the Health Board’s sustainability drive, large sections of the roof are being fitted with solar PV panels, capable of generating up to 50% of the hospital’s energy needs once fully operational.

Phase 1 is complete, and the full programme remains on track for completion by late summer 2025. This critical infrastructure upgrade is helping secure the future of one of South Wales’ most important hospitals improving safety, energy performance, and patient care environments.
