Refurbishment of Dewi Sant Hospital, enhancing clinical and public areas

Appointed by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, we were entrusted with the delivery of a comprehensive refurbishment programme at Dewi Sant Hospital, focused on enhancing key clinical and public areas within the main ward block.

The project involved the creation of five new consultation rooms on the ground floor, alongside the construction of a modern coffee shop and kitchen to improve facilities for both visitors and staff. The entrance foyer was also upgraded, featuring new WC provisions including accessible and bariatric facilities to meet diverse patient and visitor needs.

Refurbishment works extended to the Physiotherapy Department, with the addition of a new treatment cubicle and office, as well as the installation of a housekeeping washing and drying room and a new dirty utility area. As part of essential infrastructure improvements, we carried out the replacement of roof coverings to the main block and undertook the full demolition and reconstruction of the Radiology Department, in addition to the complete redevelopment of Wards 2 and 4.

The scheme also delivered enhanced circulation areas, a refurbished reception, and modernised stairwell balustrading. Building services were significantly upgraded with the installation of a new HTM-compliant ventilation system, including new air handling units and a dedicated Building Management System (BMS). A new lighting system was introduced, supported by an IPS/UPS backup system to ensure resilience and continuity of service. Additional upgrades included new IT and data cabling, fire alarm systems, medical bedhead trunking, and nurse call systems.

A critical aspect of the project was the close coordination with third-party specialists to enable the safe and efficient relocation of the radiology machine and its supporting infrastructure. This careful planning and execution ensured the timely achievement of key milestones for installation and operational readiness.

In what proved to be an extremely difficult and problematic environment to work in the regular ASL contract team were extremely professional, efficient and understanding of the client’s needs throughout the entire of the scheme. Additional works scope and variations were absorbed into the scheme and again dealt with in a very pro-active professional manner.
