Visitor infrastructure scheme at Pontneddfechan, designed to address the growing levels of tourism

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council via the SWWRCF has awarded Andrew Scott Ltd the contract to delivering a £7.5m visitor infrastructure scheme at Pontneddfechan, designed to address the growing pressures of tourism on the local community and natural environment. Funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the development is part of a wider £17.7 million Levelling Up Fund investment that also includes enhancements at the Gnoll Estate, also being delivered by Andrew Scott Ltd.
The scheme is designed to sustainably manage the area’s increasing popularity attracting around 160,000 visitors annually while supporting the local economy and improving the visitor experience. Key components of the development include:
Permanent Parking Facilities: A new 125-space car park, including formal and overflow parking, coach and minibus access, and electric vehicle charging points, to alleviate congestion and improve road safety.
Visitor Hub with Retail and Welfare Facilities: A welcoming gateway building housing public toilet facilities, a farm/community shop, a coffee kiosk, and associated utility areas including a bin store and plant room.
Low-Key Tourist Accommodation: Family-friendly visitor accommodation comprising approximately eight bedrooms, enabling overnight stays and supporting longer visits to the area.
Public Realm Enhancements: The creation of a village square, a children’s play park, pedestrian-friendly open spaces, traffic calming measures, improved landscaping, and visitor interpretation and signage to enhance accessibility and aesthetics.
Access Infrastructure Improvements: Demolition of outdated toilet facilities and outbuildings adjacent to Sgwd Gwladys.
This strategic investment not only supports the long-term sustainability of Pontneddfechan as a key destination within “Waterfall Country” but also enhances quality of life for residents through improved infrastructure, environmental enhancements, and local economic opportunities
