Pentwyn Leisure Centre

Major refurbishment of Pentwyn Leisure Centre, originally constructed in 1988

Cardiff Council has appointed Andrew Scott Ltd via the SWESCAP framework to undertake the major refurbishment of Pentwyn Leisure Centre, originally constructed in 1988, to deliver modern, focused, and sustainable leisure facilities. The project will transform the existing centre into a more efficient and user-friendly community hub, with a particular focus on enhancing the swimming provision.

Key features include:

  • A new 25m x 12m training pool with a movable split floor, allowing adjustable depth for a range of activities, including shallow splash pool.   This included the demolition of existing and construction of a new reinforced concrete structure.

  • Installation of air source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels to significantly improve energy efficiency and align with Cardiff Council’s One Planet Cardiff sustainability goals.

  • Remediation and refurbishment of external facades and windows.

  • Potential creation of a padel tennis area through third-party leasing of a new multi-use hall and external space.

  • Refurbishment of the external 3G full-sized and mini pitches (covered under a separate project).

Future work may include a boxing club, reception and children's splash pool complete with slides and tunnels.

The refurbishment includes significant upgrades to the building’s structural, fabric, mechanical and electrical systems, including the complete replacement of all existing plant and switchgear. Works will primarily focus on the pool area, reception refurbishment, plant rooms, and changing facilities. Some external works will be carried out to the rear of the site for services installation.

While public access to certain internal areas may be restricted during construction, the centre will remain operational, continuing to offer fitness classes, gym access, sports hall activities (including badminton and pickleball), and use of the 3G pitch.

The project reflects Cardiff Council’s commitment to delivering accessible, inclusive, and environmentally responsible community facilities for the Pentwyn area
