Paper Production Facility, Bridgend

The successful delivery of a major design and build project for WEPA, a leading international paper manufacturer, at their Bridgend site in South Wales

This multi-million-pound expansion marks a significant milestone in WEPA’s strategic growth across Europe, enhancing production capacity and creating over 50 new jobs in the local area.

Delivered within a live production environment, the complexity and scale of the project demanded meticulous planning, rigorous health and safety protocols, and seamless coordination across multiple disciplines. Working in close collaboration with WEPA and specialist international equipment suppliers, our team successfully integrated highly technical design requirements to accommodate state-of-the-art production machinery.

The expansion comprised the construction of several new steel and concrete frame buildings to house an array of new facilities, including:

  • A pulp storage facility for virgin fibre bales

  • A fully equipped bale handling area

  • A dedicated sludge press building

  • A paper machine building to accommodate a second production line, including stock preparation

  • Jumbo reel storage

  • A converting extension for an additional roll line

  • A high bay storage warehouse with capacity for approximately 35,000 pallets

  • A dedicated shipping zone for finished products

The development also incorporated new office accommodation, meeting rooms, training areas, and modern staff welfare facilities.

Significant infrastructure works were carried out to support the new layout of the expanded mill, including underground services, new roads, and hard standings. A key feature of the build was the use of precast concrete elements supplied by German manufacturer Monnerjahn, with over 600 prefabricated components including columns and roof beams up to 25 metres long transported to site and installed with precision.

This ambitious project not only increases WEPA’s production capabilities in the UK but also underscores their commitment to sustainable investment and long-term growth within the European market.
