Landmark visitor centre for coastal park gateway

Andrew Scott Ltd constructed the Millennium Visitor Centre at North Dock, Llanelli, as the flagship development of the 1,000-hectare Millennium Coastal Park — a major transformation of former industrial land into a landscape of green space, promenades, and wildlife habitats.

Positioned along a 22km stretch of coastline, the Centre serves as both a focal point and gateway to the park. Designed by Powell Dobson Architects, the building merges seamlessly with its reclaimed coastal setting, combining contemporary form with references to Llanelli’s maritime heritage. A striking 12.5m stainless steel mesh sail rises from the three-storey, 14.5m-high structure, evoking Celtic seafaring tradition and offering dynamic transparency depending on the light and viewing angle.

The building features glazed circulation corridors, panoramic estuary views, and sculptural forms inspired by local sedimentary and marine landscapes. A central spine wall guides the coastal path through the interior, culminating in decks overlooking the Gower Peninsula.

The Centre includes a café, shop, exhibitions, tourist information, and several retail outlets. Extended promenades and parking for 150 vehicles, including a coach drop-off point, support high visitor traffic.

Completed in the early 2000s during the final phase of the park’s development, the Centre required sensitive construction on reclaimed ground, with engineered foundations and integrated earthworks. It remains a landmark destination, symbolising Llanelli’s transition from industrial past to ecological renewal.
