Ground Stabilisation, Fforestfach

Complex Ground Stabilisation and Landslip Remediation

Following an unforeseen landslip, this challenging civil engineering project involved the remediation and ground stabilisation of a 25-metre embankment located within the operational Fforestfach Retail Park and adjacent to the heavily trafficked A483.

Working in a live commercial environment with high pedestrian footfall and constant vehicular activity, the scheme demanded meticulous planning, stringent safety measures, and phased execution to minimise disruption to the public and retail operations.

Key elements of the project included:

  • Implementation of comprehensive traffic and pedestrian management systems

  • Design and installation of robust temporary works to ensure stability and safe working conditions

  • Installation of 600mm diameter bored piles to stabilise the embankment

  • Construction of a permanent reinforced concrete pile capping beam

  • Formation of a cast in-situ reinforced concrete gravity retaining wall

The works were carried out under tight constraints with a focus on safety, precision, and coordination with stakeholders, ensuring the successful remediation of the landslip and long-term stability of the site. This complex engineering solution has safeguarded key infrastructure and ensured the continued safe operation of one of Swansea’s busiest retail parks.

During the Fforestfach project I received zero complaints from the public. Residents were keen to relay how ‘safe they felt’ during the construction work, especially when the contractor allocated a designated person to assist residents when the location of a road cross was relocated.
