Ysgol Gynradd
Groes-wen Primary School
First of its kind for Wales providing dual language education

This project involved the design and construction of a new two-storey, 420-pupil primary school built to a BREEAM Excellent standard for energy performance and Very Good overall. The scheme included all associated services, drainage, hard and soft landscaping, and external works.
The building accommodates nursery, reception, and infant classrooms on the ground floor, with junior classrooms located on the first floor. Designed with a contemporary architectural style, the school also incorporates a variety of facilities accessible to the wider community.
As the first of its kind in Cardiff, the school offers a unique dual-language education model. It provides a two-form entry structure, with one form offering Welsh-medium education and the other offering a bilingual stream (English and Welsh), broadening educational choice and supporting the promotion of the Welsh language. Additionally, the school includes provision for 96 part-time nursery places and works in partnership to offer wrap-around childcare, supporting local families with flexible, high-quality early years provision.
Delivered by Plasdŵr’s lead developer, Redrow Homes South West, under a Section 106 agreement with Cardiff Council, the school complements the broader education investment being made through Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.

“Having recently worked with Andrew Scott Ltd on a completed project in Cardiff, we have nothing but praise for the project management and high-quality build from inception through to completion. Despite an extremely tight programme, the team ensured the build was completed safely and delivered by the Contract completion date. All requests for change were dealt with professionally and in a timely manner. The team worked with us to ensure we could move into the school ahead of PC, so it could open on time.”
