Winner: LABC Building Excellence Award

Andrew Scott Ltd was appointed to undertake the sensitive restoration and conservation of historic buildings at the Grade I listed Dyffryn Gardens, transforming them into the Cory Education Centre a dedicated space for talks, workshops, and educational activities that support this popular National Trust destination.

The contract also included the construction of a new Visitor Centre, built on the footprint of the estate’s former kennels. The new facility comprises a reception building, tea room, gift shop, and supporting amenities designed to enhance the overall visitor experience.

In keeping with the site's Grade I listing, all refurbishment works were carried out using traditional materials and methods. These included lime wash paints and lime-based renders incorporating horsehair, ensuring historical accuracy and authenticity. All works were delivered in accordance with CADW’s conservation briefs and specifications, with restoration carried out by directly employed stonemasons skilled in the use of lime mortar.

Externally, the project delivered significant improvements to the estate, including the construction of new access roads and pathways, a flood alleviation pond, parkland fencing, soft and hard landscaping, and a new children’s playground adjacent to the café.

Environmental protection was a key priority throughout the works. Daily liaison with ecological consultants ensured the safety of local wildlife, including bats, newts, and nesting birds, with all external activities carefully managed to minimise ecological impact.

Despite challenging weather conditions and scope variations, all works were completed on time and within budget. Importantly, the site remained open to the public throughout the project, with strict safety protocols in place to protect visitors and staff.

The project was recognised with an LABC Building Excellence Award, reflecting the exceptional quality of the heritage conservation and construction work. The National Trust was highly satisfied with the outcome and has since commissioned additional projects with Andrew Scott Ltd.
