Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon

Purpose-built school represents a significant investment to future education

The new Cwm Gwyddon Primary School is a 420-place Welsh-medium facility that includes a 16-place Special Resource Base (SRB), a 60-place Nursery, and a dedicated Rising Threes provision, supporting early years foundation learning. Built to BREEAM Excellent standards, the school is situated on the site of the former Cwmcarn High School and features modern amenities including landscaped play areas, on-site car parking, and a dedicated bus drop-off zone.

This thoughtfully designed, single-storey development comprises three distinct building elements:

  • A double-height building housing the main hall and kitchen facilities, providing a central hub for school gatherings and meal services.

  • A teaching block with classrooms and support spaces arranged around a central ‘street space’. This light-filled corridor integrates flexible learning zones for IT, a library, and food technology, as well as adaptable group rooms for specialist teaching and pupil support.

  • A childcare unit connected to the northern section of the teaching block, ensuring seamless provision for younger learners.

The building's orientation and architectural design prioritise natural daylight, with southeast and southwest-facing elevations and strategically placed lantern lights over the central street. This central street acts as a spine for the school, drawing natural light into internal corridors and filtering it through glazed screens into adjacent classrooms.

Classrooms are thoughtfully arranged in pairs along the central street, each with direct access to shared cloakroom and toilet facilities, as well as external teaching and play areas. Designed for natural ventilation and optimal daylight use, the learning environments promote both sustainability and student wellbeing.

This is an exciting time for us as a school community. Everyone has been involved in the process so far and we are really enthused to continue to play a vital role in the school’s development.
