Design and construction of two major warehouse facilities, 20 Shed and Atlantic Shed, for Associated British Ports (ABP) at the Port of Newport

Andrew Scott Ltd was appointed to deliver the design and construction of two major warehouse facilities, 20 Shed and Atlantic Shed, for Associated British Ports (ABP) at the Port of Newport. All works were carried out within a live, safety-critical port environment, requiring close coordination with port operations to ensure uninterrupted activity and the highest standards of health and safety.
20 Shed – New Warehouse Construction
Located on the north side of South Dock, the new 20 Shed warehouse provides an additional 3,700 m² of storage space, primarily serving the agricultural bulk sector, including the handling and storage of feed and fertiliser cargoes. The building is also equipped to support growing demand from the steel industry.
The works included piled foundations and reinforced concrete retaining walls, designed to resist the pressures from stored materials and accidental impacts from heavy bulk-handling vehicles operating within the facility. The structure was carefully engineered to meet the durability, operational, and safety requirements of a high-traffic port environment.
Atlantic Shed – Design and Build Refurbishment
Andrew Scott Ltd also undertook the design and build refurbishment of the Atlantic Shed, delivering a modernised 7,200 m² warehouse facility. Upgrades included the installation of two new gantry cranes, along with improved access roads, significantly enhancing the port’s capability to handle large volumes of imported steel coil, up to 30,000 tonnes.
Strategically located and linked to the rail network, the facility plays a vital role in supporting supply chains for the automotive and white goods manufacturing sectors.
Both projects underscore Andrew Scott Ltd’s expertise in delivering complex infrastructure within operational port environments, on time, to specification, and with an uncompromising commitment to safety and quality.
The two warehouse projects are part of ABP's port‑centric logistics initiative, designed to reduce road haulage by bringing manufacturing and storage directly onto the port estate, lowering carbon emissions while boosting supply chain efficiency.
