Corporate Social Responsibility
Construction of a 200m inland Surf Lake using ground-breaking Wavegarden cove technology – the first of its kind in the UK. This exciting facility will generate up to 1,000 quality waves per hours, ranging from 50cm (1.7ft) to almost 2m (6.5ft) in height.
The new build also includes an education centre for schools and colleges, a café and bar, a surf shop. There’s also external works for landscaped gardens and car parks
“Our responsible approach to construction has been a fundamental factor in our long-standing success as we recognise that our activities have an impact on the environment and local communities in which we operate.
Our company is managed in such a way that business decisions reflect ethical, economic, social and environmental best practice.
We are recognised as a company which is committed to its employees, clients, supply chain partners and local communities.
Our approach to CSR coupled with our long-standing financial stability is evidenced through; repeat business, our position within collaborative frameworks and our ability to attract and retain new clients.
We are involved in a wide range of national and regional projects which aim to enhance the communities in which we live and work, and we are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility in the following areas:
- Health and Safety
- Quality Management
- Environmental Management
- Our Customers
- Our Supply Chain
- Our Communities
Fundamentally CSR is more than just an ‘ethos’, it is a proactive culture, reflected in our day-to-day business activities and the behaviour of all our staff.”
Mark Bowen – Managing Director
Health & Safety
The health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, and everyone we come into contact with, is our number one priority.
We work tirelessly to create a secure working environment across all of our business activities, maintaining an outstanding safety record, whilst reducing accident frequency rates. Our high standards and consistent commitment to health and safety is reflected in us receiving a RoSPA ‘Gold Medal’ in 2017 in recognition of 5 consecutive Gold Awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Our Health and Safety Management System is registered to meeting the fully requirements of OHSAS 18001:2007, whilst our behavioural safety campaign ‘Always Safe’ is evident in all we do and every single employee is encouraged to play their part in creating a safe working environment.
As part of our approach to continuous improvement we provide a programme of safety training to our staff and to our supply chain partners.
Our designated H&E Manager Justin Kingdom develops and implements our health and safety procedures and reports directly to our Managing Director, Mark Bowen.
We recognise our client’s intention that their completed building should demonstrate a high quality of design, finish and performance and to satisfy fully that intent, we implement our Quality Management System throughout the design, procurement, construction and handover stages.
Achieving the required quality of finished product and complete customer satisfaction requires the combination of; the right procedures, the right culture and the commitment of all individuals and organisations involved.
Quality cannot be “inspected in” to a project at the eleventh hour. It must be built into every stage of the process via a “right first time” approach and supported by a planned inspection and validation process.
Our project management staff and trade-basis supervisors manage all aspects of a project with quality as a prime driver.
Our approach to achieving project quality is implemented under our formal Quality Management System, which meets the full requirements of BS EN ISO 9001:2015 with no exceptions.
Under the guidance of our Quality Advisor, Josh Wilkins, a project specific Quality Control Plan is developed with each Project Manager. The requirements of the Quality Control Plan reflect all design and specification requirements, which are then cascaded down to all supply chain partners through pre-start meetings, inductions and on-site briefings.
Josh, Justin and our Directors participate in systematic reviews of all aspects of Quality Management; on-site, in our offices and plant & transport department, to ensure that quality requirements are clearly stated, understood, implemented, recorded, reviewed and updated as required.
We are committed to reducing any adverse environmental effects of our operations to a practicable minimum, and we continually work with our customers, consultants, supply chain partners and local stakeholders to agree and develop solutions that are sympathetic to the local environment and community.
We have developed formal Environmental Management Procedures which have been registered as meeting the requirements of ISO 14001:2015. Our HSE Manager Justin Kingdom and our Directors regularly review and, where necessary, refine and strengthen our procedures to reflect our aims for continual environmental improvement.
In order to reduce environmental risk at every stage of each project, we develop specific Environmental Risk Assessments which are implemented during the design, procurement, construction and post occupation stages. These Risk Assessments focus on minimising such things as; environmental pollution, dust, noise, contamination of water and light pollution.
We promote environmental benefits through:
Site Waste Management Plans
Adopting SMARTWaste® to reduce waste to landfill
Register each project under the Considerate Constructor Scheme
Implement Green Travel Plans
We work with our clients to intelligently develop design and construction solutions which can deliver long-term and value-for-money solutions.
By implementing sustainable standards such as BREEAM and Passivhaus, we have incorporated into projects a range of low energy / low carbon solutions including; ground source heat pumps, photovoltaics, combined heat & power, wind turbines, variable air volume controls and occupancy sensors for heating, lighting and ventilation.
As CDMC I will say that Andrew Scott were the best performers on projects of this type that I have worked with. The Site Managers cared, were willing to please, but not at any cost (H&S), good communicators and man managers!
That is why Community Benefits are an integrated part of our business and we strive to add the maximum value through the re-investment of the local pound within the areas where we work.
Investing in the delivery of Community Benefit Plans, Targeted Recruitment and Training Methods Statements and Local Supply Chain Initiatives, help us to make a long-lasting contributions to economy, society and to local people.
Our Supply Chain
The wellbeing of our supply chain is a critical factor in maintaining our long-standing reputation and our ability to maintain and develop successful working relationships with a wide spectrum of customers.
Our supply chain engagement and development process ensures that existing partners, new companies, local businesses and social enterprises are all represented within our supply chain whilst at the same time promoting equality and diversity.
We understand the needs of our suppliers and work in partnership with them, creating mutually beneficial working relationships. We provide; straight forward and non-adversarial procurement and contract conditions, a prompt payment process and supported training courses.
In de-risking our customer’s projects, we select our supply chain partners based on their; KPI results (including; safety, time, cost, quality, environmental performance, supervision and resources), previous project experience, resource commitments to ‘live’ projects, project location and financial standing.
As part of our Community Benefit Method Statements, we capture information which allows us to run spend reports by postcode and proximity for each project.
Whether new build or redevelopment, we work with our customers and design teams to create cost effective construction solutions which create low energy, low maintenance and future ready capital projects.
We have nurtured positive client relationships through collaborative frameworks and long-standing partnering agreements.
We take the time to engage with and understand new client’s key business drivers, tailoring our construction service to meet their specific investment and project requirements.
As part of our Quality Management System, we carry out Customer Satisfaction Surveys to ensure our performance aligns with their aspirations for a project.
We carefully review comments, looking for ways to improve our performance to not just meet but exceed their expectations on future projects.
The Project was excellently run both on and off site. Andrew Scott was very collaborative with the project team, school and client. Although the works were carried out on a live school site, which can be a challenge, Andrew Scott managed the site excellently throughout the works. Andrew Scott were very conscientious throughout the project and CCC were very happy with the Health and Safety and Quality of the Works throughout
